Robert Cornelius (1809-1893) was an American pioneer and one of the first photographers in the United States.
Early Life and Education
Born in Philadelphia to a wealthy Dutch immigrant, Cornelius attended a private school where he developed an interest in chemistry.
Entry into Photography
In 1839, he met inventor Joseph Saxton, who commissioned him to silver-plate a daguerreotype plate for the first photograph taken in the United States.
This encounter piqued Cornelius' interest in photography.
